Diplomacy Amid Conflict as Zelensky Seeks Breakthrough in Florida Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida, raising expectations of renewed momentum in efforts to end Russia’s prolonged war.
The announcement comes as fighting continues across Ukraine, with Russian air strikes reported in Kyiv and Kharkiv, leaving civilians injured and forcing residents into emergency shelters.
Zelensky has said the upcoming talks will focus on a US-backed peace initiative, as well as discussions on security guarantees and economic arrangements tied to any future settlement.
One proposal under consideration involves establishing a demilitarised zone in eastern Ukraine, designed to reduce hostilities without immediately settling disputed questions of sovereignty.
Ukraine has indicated it may withdraw troops up to 40 kilometres from parts of Donbas it still controls, but only if Russia agrees to an equivalent pullback from occupied areas.
Russia, which currently controls most of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, has reacted cautiously, with senior officials calling the US plan fundamentally different from their own negotiations.
Kremlin leaders have reiterated that Ukrainian forces must fully withdraw from Donbas or face continued military operations, rejecting compromises on territorial control.
Trump has voiced confidence about engaging both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, while emphasising that any final agreement will require his personal approval.
Zelensky has described recent negotiations as productive, noting that revised proposals now include US and European security guarantees modelled on Nato’s Article 5 commitments.
